For a number of years I have been working on a project to increase awareness to the issue of waste plastic in the world oceans. I base the project around the theme of listening to the ocean.

Listen to the Whales

On visiting the northern shores of the Açores I learned of the whaling ships that sailed from the Americas from 1896 to 1949 to hunt them for lamp oil.

A collage of real plastic to highlight the fact that plastic consumption poses severe dangers to humans, with an estimated ingestion of over 100,000 microplastic particles per annum.

This lovely song was my favourite in 1961, haunting my memory for 60 years. My exhibition in 2021 at Museu de Portimão, with permission from Faber & Faber was dedicated to Nina & Frederik.

Abandoned anchors on a beach in eastern Algarve remind me of the lengthy sea journeys to fish for cod in Baltic waters, and the loneliness of womenfolk left for months on end.


Listen there's the dolphin
For my action against plastic waste I made a dolphin, dumped bottles were easy to source - it traveled the Algarve in the summer of 2019 and was marooned on the roundabout in Lagoa when Covid struck, where it stayed for many years
